 | RAMALLAH, West Bank, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Mahmoud Abbas was sworn in Saturday as the Palestinian Authority's new president and nominated Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia to form the new cabinet. Abbas, who succeeded the late Yasser Arafat, vowed in a speech before the Palestinian Legislative Council to seek the end of Israeli occupation, establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and ensure the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland. He reiterated his commitment to a just peace settlement and to the Road Map for peace in the Middle East "to recover the Palestinian legitimate rights." "We are attached to the choice of just peace and we will implement our commitments under the Road Map ... Israel also has to implement its part of the deal," Abbas said. He also promised to follow Arafat's lead and work hard to unify the Palestinian factions. Abbas then undertook his first action as PA president by re-nominating Qureia to form the new Palestinian cabinet.
