CHRISTIAN DUTY
Why Christian life hates to be contained
To Read: Zephaniah 1-3
To Know:
"For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to
strengthen you,." (Rm. 1:11)
During my growing up, I lacked true ambition. It was not my motive to leave
the world a better place than I found it. Although sports were fun, I never
set my sights on becoming a great athlete or setting records. When offered a
football scholarship in 1961, the tuition money excited me more than team
triumphs. Studies were also a means to an end. At Fort Bliss, Texas I
studied and later taught guided missile electronics mostly to protect myself
from being sent to patrol the DMZ (Demilitarized zone) in Korea. Genuine
ambition was not in my spirit.
Jesus Christ gave me my ambition. Christ gave me the zeal to know him and to
make him known. Having barely read a book for a school assignment and never
just for fun, I suddenly was filled with a thirst for knowledge. My
insatiable appetite for knowledge was the overflow of my desire to know
every word in the book of books, the Bible. This newfound ambition became
part of my very being. It has never waned.
Paul was nearing sixty when he wrote his letter to the Romans. His ambition
also never faded. He had more to learn and do. He was not yet fully
established. Both Paul and the Romans had miles to go before their faith
would be complete. Paul's ambition was to visit Rome that he might add to
their faith and that they might add to his.
To Do:
Knowing Christ includes making him known. My eagerness of knowing was
accompanied by an eagerness to share that knowledge with everyone else. The
Christian life hates to be contained. Life hidden in Christ is not content
to have; it also wants to give. It comes with an inner compulsion to share
with others. When Paul was hindered from going to Rome, he sent his words by
letter. Ought we not avail ourselves of every opportunity given us to share
our knowledge of Christ with others?
