The ABC are starting a new music show called Spicks and Specks (not sure of
spelling). Apparently it'll feature bands and comedians. Anyone have more
info to provide? Joe Murray, are you out there? It sounds like the Studio
22 aimed at the under-40s? The show's based in Melbourne and they're
shooting the pilot on Wednesday and another show next week.

: ABC - new music show called Spicks and Specks

With that title, it sounds like it should be a footage-driven retrospective
trawl, like 'Walk On By'.

Do you think Studio 22 is aimed at the over-40s?

There's been a lot of music retrospective specials on the ABC in the last
few years so I'm hoping it's not.

Okay - over 35s, then.

Still surprises me, but I'll go with it, and I also applaud your literacy in not
adding the ubiquitous, superfluous, extraneous and erroneous apostrophe in 35s!

A very ordinary song by the Bee Gees.

Yes, that too, but it's not relevant to the television show.

Well presumably not totally irrelevant - I guess it's where they got the
title from. Odd if as you say its for an 'under 40's' demographic, as they
would have little interest in the BeeGees or a song that was a hit before
most of them were born.

I was only speculating about the target demographic. A call for audience
members was made on JJJ so I assumed it was aimed at a youngish audience.
It could be another retrospective type show like you say given the title.

They could have called for audience on Rad Nat, ABC local radio, even ABC FM as
well, (not that I have any evidence that this HAS happened). TV and the ABC
website should also be part of the ABC blanket-callout.

That title definitely implies retrospective to me... so with a live audience it
might be a bit like that one that Bob Downe (oops, Mark Trevorrow) hosted
recently; 'The Way We Were'... but focused on music (and comedy??)

Round these parts ALL ABC is on the FM band, there is no AM ABC at all,
and thank god for that!

Yep, we used to get the local station on AM but even that's no more.

....this one's a music quiz show, in competition with SBS's "Rockwiz".

Ugh. I was hoping for something like Countdown meets The Big Gig.

Thanks.

Music Quiz shows on Aus TV since year dot = 0
Music Quiz shows on Aus TV in 2005 = 2

Seems a bit strange that our two publiclly funded national
broadcasters should be doing the same thing at the same time,
particularly in such a narrow genre.

At least SBS have a website for RocKwiz and the audience promos look
like fun. Anyone in Melb going along?
