I've been using Netscape's newsreader, but the damned thing seems to get
easily confused about threading, and can't keep track of whether a
thread really contains unread messages. I downloaded the most recent
version of Netscape, which has only made things worse.

I looked at XNews, but I don't like it.

Any other readers (for Windows) that people have found reliable and
convenient to use?

Sylvia.

What's wrong with OE?

What's the probability that Microsoft have finally removed the last
buffer overflow error in it?

Presumably you have things set up on your machine to reduce risks. What
is the probability of an adverse effect of using OE in that case?

I know of no way to calculate the probability either in the case of OE,
nor in the case of any other software. However, MS have demonstrated a
quite unbelievable talent for perpetrating that sort of error, and their
software is a popular target for hackers. It doesn't appear to be
sensible for me to start using OE now, given that I've never used it in
the past.

Ok. You might find that OE is not that much more insecure than other stuff
exposed to the RW, if sensible precautions are taken. It's quite a good
newsreader, as well.

Pan or Mozilla. Both available on Windows.

You could also install a Linux distro as well as Windows, to give you
all the Linus newreaders.

Thanks.

Indeed, I have Linux running on my Internet gateway - the address my
postings appear to come from is that system, not my Windows box (hang a
Window's box on the net - are you mad?). I'd just need to figure out
where I left my Window's X-server.

XNews is more suited to binaries than general reading (imo).

I use Forte` Agent v2.0 and love it. Highly configurable, you can grab
a 30 Day trial of it from the link below.

http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

If you decide not to purchase after 30 days, it just reverts to Free
Agent which has a few features like spell checking disabled.
