 | It is now 1.00 a.m. in Sydney and I have given it a whole hour just in case daylight saving had some impact on the prediction.
Unfortunately for those Melburnians waiting patiently for Melbourne to become Australia's best city to live in, I regret to inform you that Sydney is still here so you lot might have to wait a bit longer.

Geez, just the thought of the amount of destruction required across the country to make Melbourne the best city to live in...

Melbourne was voted the WORLDS most liveable city. I suspect you lot have been listening to your own propaganda too much.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Melbourne and Vancouver are the best cities in the world for expatriates to live in, according to a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Both Australia and Canada fared well in the survey, with the west Australian city of Perth ranking third, and Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide tying in eighth place.

Statistically Sydney gets more rain than Melbourne. Melbourne just gets it's rain when you are not expecting it!
Hook turns are only in the centre of the city, on roads with trams. They are safer than a normal right hand turn and avoid slowing down the Trams. I don't understand why people have so much trouble with them. They are covered in the drivers handbook for getting your licence!
Melbourne traffic is perfect now they have all the new freeways up and running. I can get from one side of Melbourne to the other (50km distance) in 20 minutes. Those who don't use the freeways are usually the people who complain about the traffic!

Ah I know those right hand turns, they're not covered in the handbook when you get your license outside Victoria and if you don't go into Melbourne much... my first experience was as a visitor with a boat trailer, looking for Parkdale yacht club & never been to Melbourne. We managed ok but it's hard to make yourself believe it will go to plan. The sailing was in the worst conditions I have experienced in 40 years racing and not being content I went back another year & it was just as shitty. If you can't see the other side of Port Pillip bay it's raining... if you can see it means it's going to rain.

You towed a boat through the middle of the city, are you crazy? I would not do that through ANY capital city! There are "city bypass" signs everywhere to help people go around the city. Especially trucks and trailers. Oh well, you got there eventually. Glad you didn't get stuck under a bridge or something. A good map always helps when driving through an unfamiliar city.
Port Phillip bay is known for fast changing weather. It can be glassy calm for many days in a row, but when a cold front turns up it will change is less than a hour. The bay is at the bottom of a large land mass with no mountants for the weather to go over, so it rolls in very fast from bass straight. If you have been caught out there in bad weather, it is a result of not heading the warnings in the weather broadcast. If they say there will be a cool change, they mean it will be bloody awful on the bays :)

Nah this was only 14 feet long & liftable by 2 ppl. and 25 years ago... to Black Rock. Bypasses wouldn't go there would they?

I wouldn't have let boats out in it either but if they have a sailing championship there they have to run it some time eh? There has been at least one year when everyone at a title in Melbourne had to go home because it was too long a wait for weather decent enough to have more than 3 heats.

Yep! They had one back then. it's still there. Get you right around the outside of the city quickly with no trams or hook turns. Big green signs with bright green edges saying city bypass. :)

Well I cant complain. yesterday was in the 20's, so is today. It will be in the high 30's from now until Thursday next week, then a big storm for sure! I'd suggest the organisers need to pick late summer events instead of winter. Of course they may choose winter on purpose for the extra challenge :)

We have one of those too. It is called Sydney Road. You probably call it the Hume Hwy at your end. :)

Late Jan is hot. Dec and early Jan are often rainy. Spring seems to drag on an extra month in Melbourne, but that is OK because we have extra summer too. We often get summer temperatures right up to Easter.
Honestly I think you just got caught out in an unfamiliar city. You would have expected differences if you were visiting another country, but you were now prepared/expecting them in your own country.
