We have a video file, taken off our digital camera. It's an AVI in PAL
format. We need to be able to convert it to NTSC and burn it as an NTSC
DVD to ship overseas.

Whenever we do it, it comes out really crappy. I'm wondering if any of
you guys have had to do this and if so, what software did you use to
convert it? Was it pre-burning, or as a part of the burning process.

Thanks

I've had some good experiences using a program called TMPGENC Xpress 3.0 to
convert a NTSC AVI file to PAL DVD. Then I use Nero 6 to burn the DVD file
to DVD. It works like a charm. No quality degradation issues that I can see.

Of course it also converts PAL AVI to NTSC DVD.

I think you can download a trial version of the program from the net. You
will need a program like Nero to burn the image to disc.

Retail version http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/te3xp.html

Free version http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html (not xpress version but
effective all the same).

how did you convert it?
if you use something like VideoStudio then it is always
advisable to import video in the format you want
to save "double" encrypting it. Most software
should allow you to specify which format to use
when importing from a digital camera.

Will have to check with the missus when she gets home (it's her
project). However, as far as I am aware, she used the software that came
bundled with the Sony digital video camera to take it off the camera
(via firewire). It was then stored as an AVI file. She used Adobe
Premiere to create the effects, commentary, etc. She then used Nero to
burn it to DVD. In PAL, it comes out really great. But when in NTSC, it
looks like crap. Poor sound as well.

You'd reckon that something like this would be piss easy to do....

Two options...

1) Dont bother if ur intended audiences have a multi-format player, ie NTSC
& PAL compatible player or

2) Visit this site for more info/tips/guide

I don't think that many DVD players sold in the US have PAL
compatibility. After all, there's no real need to, given the size of the
market and where most DVDs come from. Certainly, when the missus emailed
a short clip of the video overseas, it wouldn't play on the recipient's
PC. And that has me tossed, given that they were trying to view it under
Media Player using a fairly standard computer.

yeah me too.

Perhaps the receiver require a codec updates.

Use G-spot to check the audio/video format of the clip created.
