 | Sorry for the cross post.
I won't be posting for a while so apologies in advance.
I purchased a Voxson portable DVD player today and I was rather disappointed to see it was labelled both on the unit itself and in the manual with a big "region 4" symbol....
BUT....
I put a few of my R1 disks into it and it played them all flawlessly. So what gives? Are these being sold with the wrong labels on them and they're all region free?
Model is SL-50

All new players these days play multi-region, despite the labelling. I found this out when my 2002 player played discs of different regions.

Oh ha ha
I think this is great... Go Harvey Norman and go Voxson for producing multi region machines that are multi region out of the box

Dick Smith used to have the crack for making the Voxson players region free on their web site.

Even better - I bought an LG external DVD drive burner for my laptop last week - and discovered it was current region 'not selected'. It's certainly the first time I've encountered a computer DVD drive region free out of the box. I suspect it is an error in this case, and a step was missed in the factory.

I have never seen a new computer DVD driver or burner that wasn't region free. They all leave the factory that way.
If ever you find one that has a region set, then it is a second hand unit.

That doesn't compute to me - no user would ever set the region themselves! If I never set the region, I can play any region DVD. How do you then explain that most people with DVD drives in their PCs have a region set (Hence websites specifically to 'crack' the DVD firmware to allow multiregion?).

The DVD player software does the region setting. It's horribly irritating.

It did occur to me after Ken's post that maybe the standard operation was that it set the region based on the first DVD it plays. Oh well - maybe I haven't played enough DVDs yet - I've only had it a few weeks. I'll wait and see.

Crikey - you'd want to know that before you got to that 5th choice. Regions are f*cked - they shouldn't exist.

Same with my laptop. And that really shits me, considering I watch region 1 and region 4 DVDs. I'm hoping I'll be able to use dvd43 on it and not have to worry any more. I doubt there's a cracked firmware for Dell laptop dvd player/cdburners.
Cheers,

Seek and you will find...
I was pretty happy that not only did my burner become region-free, it also became a - media burner as well as a plus media burner. Still not dual-layer, but never mind.
Anyway, look at

for Dell DVD burner region-free cracks.

Most idiots will, if told they have to.
My new HP computer with DVD burner reports that the region is 'not selected'.

I just discovered a similar thing with my Pioneer DVR107D...the program I was using complained that the drive's region coding was set to 'not set' or 'not selected' or some such and could not proceed. I didn't want to set the region code, so I downloaded DVD43 and used that instead. I was asked if I wanted to set the device's region coding, adn I opted not to, but I think it set itself to region 4 anyway....

Unless it's an old model that was sitting in the stock pile.

It came from the factory like that. All of the packaging was original.

 | Whatever posessed you to buy a DVD player that was even labelled R4 only?
I thought the ACCC had already outlawed this nonsense anyhoo?

No, that was the New Zealand equivalent.
The ACCC looked at it a few years ago. I doubt they will look at it again, now that the government has put its own man in the top job there...

It is not illegal to make a machine purely region 4 (and when you think about it why should it be the consumer has the ultimate right not to buy it) but what they did do was to advise that it was illegal to block region free / non-region 4 players & discs coming into the country so basically market forces drove the break down of an artificial barrier that the big boys were only to keen to have because this allowed a flood of no-names into the country and consumers sure did vote with their $$$
