 | i went & bought one of these last night from Target as they had a special & i know i can return it if any problems, i am using TDK dvd-r on it & every second disk gets rejected! It comes up with 'self check' then tells me to remove the disk or disk problem etc. & they are from the same batch i use on the pc burner with no problems, i thought tdk were good media but maybe the e55 is crap? either way i guess i will be taking it back for a refund due to it not being very media friendly & wait for the price of hard drive models to drop

 | I have one of the earlier Panasonics (I think EMR20) and I have a similar problem with1 in 10 rejects. It turns off and I turn it back on again. It then restores or whatever. I us the same medium to burn again, usually successfully. Have only lost one dvd blank with U11 message out of 400 in 2 years

 | i seem to be able to do 2 discs then need to turn it off or even disconnect the power for awhile then try again & its fine, its like the drive is getting overheated easily as the blanks are fairly warm when i take them out of the drive even if they are rejected, is this normal?

 | It might be that the Panny is struggling to burn the cheap discs and has had to 'turn the wick up' on the laser, which would result in more heat being generated... Try it with a pack of (expensive) panasonic blanks, if you still get the same probelm then it's Panasonics problem not yours - take it back... If the Panny blanks work OK without overheating then it's a case of finding suitable cheap blanks that work - try the Ritek's they work fine in my Panny HS2

I use orion 8x on my pioneer and two panasonic recorders. Burnt 300 or so now. Only 2 failed due to power failures.

My Pioneer 520h doesnt like TDK 4x DVD-RW. It can handle 2x though. It doesn't even like Pioneer either for that matter. Which seems strange.

Fake tdk media perhaps?
I own 2 panasonic recorders and don't have any problems but then again I don't use cheap media. Good media costs more than $1 per disc.

rubbish. I pay $25 for 50 packs of Ritek purple 4x discs and get no failures at all, ever. I've burnt hundreds of the bastards. People, stop blaming the media for your crappy burners, crappily setup PC's and these total crapshit DVD recorders!

Can't speak for the recorder, my LG DVD burner is spitting over some TDK -R .. First (and last time) I will be using that. It won't work in my Panny E-100 either. The Orion 4x media I use works a treat in my Panny E-100, burnt about 50 or so.

That's weird - TDK are supposed to be a good brand they are more expensive than a lot of the cheaper ones. But then TDK had a lot of problems with their miniDV tape too - head clogging was common with TDK, perhaps I will stay away from it, pity as I was thinking of buying a spindle of 50 TDK blanks...
FWIW I have been using Ritek 8x -r with my old(!) Pansonic HS2 as well as an LG DVD burner and have had no problems at all...
Anyway thanks for the info Trev.
