Good, it is about time. What sort of tight-arses bring their own food and drinks in anyway? It's freakin annoying when some trailer trash mum brings in shopping bags from Coles full of food for her 11 kids.
If you have some sort of dietary or food-preparation requirement, or are simply a tight-arse, DON'T EAT for the length of the feature. Seriously, you won't die without food for 2 hours.
And if you must have a drink, just factor the price of water into your movie ticket - or don't go. Greater Union are a business, if they want to do this they can go ahead, it isn't illegal.

Of course they can't, it's anti-competitive.

Ah yes, there could be implications under the Trade Practices Act.
Remember the fuss when some pubs stopped providing free water and tried charging $2 for a 300ml bottle. Even though pubs are in the business of selling drinks, there are very sound reasons for requiring them to provide free water.
Cheers David

That had more to do with 'The responsible supply of alcohol" than anything else. What GU are doing is no different to any other similar business. While selling food isn't their sole business, it is a secondary business. It's like my local pool hall which sells a limited range of food and drink. I can't take my packed lunch there and play pool. It's not allowed.

There is no competition. That's why they only have one candy-bar in the cinema. It is no different to a pool hall where you aren't allowed to bring in your own food. Either you buy what they have to offer, or you eat elsewhere later.

But threatening to blow a GU cinema up if they refuse to reverse their policy certainly is illegal - which is what this poster *seems* to be saying. That's the way at least 3 of us take it anyway. The fact that "aussie bomber" hasn't clarified his position seems to support my interpretation of his motives.

You are forgetting Richard Hatch and Trevor Gensch - both have come around to my way of thinking. I'm sure there are quite a few lurkers who think the same too going by the supportive emails I'm getting.

While Trevor has his moments of trolling, I think Richard Hatch usually is a sensible poster. He just abuses people a little too quickly for my liking.

OK, so please refer us to the post where you CLAIM he HAS clarified his position? No? Can't find it? Well gee, another one of your lies? > > The OP does not have to confirm or deny your insane assertions.
Not to me no. But he might have to to the police and the courts.

The point remains, that a number of people in this group will not be going ANYWHERE NEAR a Greater Union complex in fear that his post was a real threat. For that reason alone, he should have a moral obligation to clarify what he was trying to say. No doubt, his post will be published (albiet distorted) in most of the media tomorrow and this will be discussed at length on talkback radio for weeks to come, so it is going to get out of hand mighty quickly. As I said earlier, I really don't know if it was a threat or not, but in this climate we live in with terrorism and tsunamis everywhere around us, I'm not taking any chances.

Actually some people retire an intake of food at regular intervals which could be during the time they are in the movie.

My father is one of those people. With no stomach he has to eat regularly in small amounts or he gets sick.

That's still kind of scary, especially if you miss meals. And what happens to the whole process of digestion? with no stomach I assume they are tying the oesophagus directly to the small intestine?

You'd think medical science could come up with some kind of solution to this like some kind of artificial stomach or something .. It just doesn't sound very nice or fair.

Plus ML's assuming that one has eaten *right* before going into the cinema - in which case one probably wouldn't eat during the movie anyway..
So we're not talking 2 hours here - I usually go to the movies around 6-7pm, so quite often I haven't eaten since lunchtime, so of course I'm gonna get hungry before the end of the movie...

I know people who are required to eat every 30-40 minutes for health reasons. Only small portions but still eat

You aren't serious are you? Why should we pay the exorbitant prices they charge?

Actually from all indications it probably is.

How can it be illegal? They are in the business of selling food. You can't take outside food to a restaurant or coffee to a coffee shop, so they have every right to enforce this law.

Who says? I've been doing it for years. Besides, Greater Union is neither a restaurant nor coffee shop, so your argument is invalid. It would only be valid if you took your own projector into the cinema and started watching another movie.

The ones that don't want to pay $9 for a drink and popcorn..

As he said, "tight-arses". It's like going to an upmarket restaurant and smuggling in your cheap $5 bottle of cleanskin wine. It's also like Kate Langbroek who smuggles in her baby so she can breast feed and get cheap publicity at the same time. Do you REALLY want to be associated with these sorts of people?

Crap, it's a rip-off.

No it isn't. You're going to the cinema primarily to see a movie, so that's a stupid analogy.

It's not a 'stupid analogy' at all. Most people don't go to an upmarket restaurant primarily to eat. They go there to romance a girl so they can get a root. The food and wine are just something that you have to do first. If I want a good feed, the last place I'd go to is an upmarket restaurant.
OK, if you want another analogy, how about a pool hall? You either eat what they have on offer, or you eat later. If you don't like it, the bouncer will break your legs. Why should cinema's be any different.
