 | Hi
For some reason my PC doesn't show the thingy that you need to click before I would normally remove my USB drive ... is that a problem ?
If I need to have the icon, how can I make it re-appear ?
Ta Neil

Only sometimes for some technical reason I guess. Only Win98, and maybe some other versions, uses it always. (afaik)

??? Never seen it on a Win98SE PC - only ever on a W2K or XP install.
Seems to only appear if a storage device( camera, USB stick,Zip drive, card reader etc) is plugged in

You sure it isnt behind the "<" near the time and thus hidden?
It isn't necessarily a problem but if you are worried, you can leave it until you shut down the computer at which time it is safe to remove it anyway.

 | No - my inactive (or any other) icons aren't hidden. It is simply not there.

Just rip it out. I've never had a problem removing devices without telling windows first.

Its XP is smarter than 2000.
XP , by default, sets these things to 'keep disk up to date" so so that if you are sure the file transfer has stopped, you can just disconnect.
In XP, If you want to get your USB drives to go faster, you can change the caching strategy in the properties of the drive (hardware not filesystem )..

I was using "sync.exe" to when I was using 2000. it writes back all filesystems. It seemed a better thing to do then to use that silly shutdown device thing anyway. just put sync.exe on the desktop or start menu or task bar, and its easy to use...

Try running the Hardware Wizard, Uninstall/Unplug a device > Unplug/Eject a device etc. You may find an option to check for showing the icon, or it may show the next time a USB device is plugged in.

 | Looking at the hardware wizard, it didn't give me that option. The troubleshooter (including via Device Manager) says it is working ok and I can't see any boxes to check ....?

This reminds me. When I installed XP, all I had to do was to right click on the thumbdrive under Explorer and select "eject".
Now, for the past few days, this option no longer works.
I can click on it, etc. but nothing happens. I have to click on the icon in the system tray titled "Safely Remove Hardware" then go through 3 or 4 clicks and windows just to disconnect the drive. If I don't, and just rip it out, like I did the other day, I risk corrupting files on the drive, like I did the other day.
And I have no idea as to why this suddenly changed.
