 | Hi guys,
I keep on having my computer crashing. Mainly browsing the net. The computer just suddenly restart. Black screen and reboot. When it happen I don't have any error message when the computer restart and do not know why it is doing so.
I have reformat my drives and re-instore windows XP but still do the same.
I have a pentium IV 2.8ghz 1024mb of memmory .
How can I find out what is making the computer crash? It happen a long time ago in the past but then the computer was fine now it is starting again.
Thanks for you help.

 | You need to stop it from restarting and give you an error message. From there you can diagnose the problem.
To do this (found on some page from google):
To change the recovery settings to disable automatic rebooting:1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot.

 | Check your system and app logs. If it shows as a software or driver fault then you have somewhere to work from, if it shows as "unexpected shutdown" then be prepared for some fun hardware trouble shooting.

See if there is anything useful in the event log.
Unfortunately if its a hardware problem, it can be quite a few things.
The only real alternative is to try the possibilitys systematically with the power supply being the cheapest thing to try if it isnt something as basic as the cpu fan all clogged up with fur and its just over heating. See what the cpu temp is in the bios when its just rebooted.

Is it likely that was just last summer when it was hot ?

 | Dont think it is to do with the temperature as last week was much hoter and didn't have the problem.
How can I do a memmory test?

 | My mum had a similar problem on her computer, at first I thought it was a power supply issue, but it didnt do it when booting to the command prompt, only when in windows. I couldnt solve the problem, but an update to SP2 seemed to fix it anyway. You should try starting your computer up at safe mode command prompt and leave it for a while and see if it does it there.

 | just had this exact issue, turned out to be a motherboard issue, the last time it died, it just would never start again. Not saying its what's going on with yours though.

 | I tend to agree..Sounds like hardware conflictions to me..Overheating issues with videocard CPU or memory....Check the temp shutdown in BIOS..Maybe this is set to low..

Right mouse click desktop icon 'My Computer' and select properties in menu. From the window that pops up select 'Advanced' tab. On the Advanced tab window left mouse click 'settings' button adjacent to 'Startup and Recovery'. A new window will open and you'll see several entries which are either checked or unchecked. Make sure that "Write an entry to the system log" is checked, and that "Automatically restart" is unchecked.
With those settings you should have the computer displaying a BSOD screen for most crashes with the usual cryptic message rather than the PC auto rebooting. You'll also find some crash messages written into the system logs under 'Event viewer' Right mouse click and select 'Manage' to get to event viewer.

XP by default reboots on system errors. Turn it off and see what (if any) error message you get.
Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery Settings/Automatically Restart - Uncheck this.

I had the same sort of problem some time ago. I too thought it was power supply. Turned out to be a memory fault. As some suggested, do a memory test.

It sounds like a driver issue to me, make sure you have the latest mainboard and video card drivers.

Check all you power connections within the computer maybe a loose or dirty joint showing a fault and interrupting the MB power supply.
Secondly maybe the power supply itself.
