RS is an idiot who has a tendency to offer poor/damaging advice. When confronted with facts showing this RS resorts to lies and abuse while still defending the idiotic advice he offers. While RS does sometimes offer something of merit the same information could be gain from Google or many other sources and be relied upon more than anything RS offers.

Hmmm, disagree, the advice is often helpful....
My only ever bitch with rod is the speed and voracity of the abuse - even that is often entertaining.
Notwithstanding all that, he's the only bloke I've ever seen called a 'cunty chops' in the heading of a post: That made me laugh out loud (LOL).

Having seen many occasion where he offers poor or idiotic information that may well cause the loss of data Etc. and then abusively defend his "help" when the facts are presented I think we would be better off if RS went away. Anyone who offers advice to ppl has a responsibility to ensure that information is accurate. RS makes a habit of spouting rubbish as fact. Which is fine IF the person asking for help knows RS's habits and history. If they don't and take what is said at face value then they may well find they lose data of importance.

He makes claims that completely fly in the face of common knowledge to those who actually know something about the subject through personal experience and then he defends his position with childish abuse.
ie reliability of SCSI over MFM/RLL. Commodore computers reasons for failure and why the C64 sold so well.
He was completely and utterly wrong on those subjects, and I imagine on many other subjects that he offers his baseless opinion on as fact.

You're lying again, child. I JUST commented on the reliability OF THE SCSI DRIVES THE EARLY MACS USED, NOT SCSI IN GENERAL. The SCSI drives used in the early macs were physically the same as the MFM/RLL drives and had the same reliability.

I'm still right and you are still very wrong on all those subjects, including the car-crashing one where I was deemed not responsible.
Blow it out your arse Rod, you demented, irrelevant, obsolete and compulsively lying old scrote. You are being shown up for the fool you really are on a regular basis by people who know what they are talking about and you can't deal with that fact.

Basically it does very little it just deletes the first letter of each file name & marks the sectors which were used as free in the file allocation tables (FATs). Hence if you write more data to a partition you plan to unformat you are destroying your data & any chances of recovery! At least that's my understanding of how it works (DOS did it that way)!

The old FORMAT utility saved a copy of the FAT and root directory so it was possible in many cases to use UNFORMAT to restore the disc.

Bad luck, hes screwed pretty much. You can pay for professional data retrieval but it costs more than the entire computer would be worth....
When ever i need to format a harddrive, i make sure its the only drive in there, ill unplug any others just to be safe.

Basically just redoes the directorys.

Nope. Thats a low level format which does write zeros thru all the sectors on the drive with modern drives.

Proggy called GetDataBack http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm
Becuase he had already (accidentally) reinstalled another OS on the drive, he screwed the first 600MB of the (40GB) formatted drive. Total data recovery was about 50%, he was just lucky that his important stuff was in that 50% and not the other!

Yes
You can use cheapish ($10-$80) programs that can do it to a varying degree of success (could be 100% data retrived). Or pay $250+ to pay for a professional to do it, which will have a higher success rate (not necessarily 100% data retrieved though)

Eh, try more like about $3000. I had a co worker who screwed this drive and that's about how much it cost to do it. If we hadn't, the client would have been screaming at us.
Where did you get $250+ from?

That's why I said $250+. You can get recovery people for $250, but they aren't as good as the $3000 guys

You need the $2000+ guys if you fuck your drive like drop it in water, destroy it with a hammer, paint over the tracks, etc. But if all you're after is recovering a formatted drive, the cheap ones are fine. Of course the expensive guys charge a fortune even for easy jobs like that.

I formatted my drive then reinstalled XP Office Publisher Photoshop and some other progs and still recovered the files I needed using this http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoveryprofessional
