 | I recently purchased an external 3.5" USB 2.0 hard disk case and set it all up.
But whenever I connect it to the USB 2.0 port on my computer I always get the message.
"The USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi Speed USB 2.0 port."
which assumes I am connecting the device to a slow USB 1.1 port which is not correct.
I have another external USB 2.0 hard disk and have no problems connecting it to the USB 2 port of the same computer.
I am using a USB 2.0 pci card with NEC chipset.
Any ideas why the new case I just got is haveing these issues and not picking up that its being connected to usb2 instead of usb 1.1?

That's a strange one.
I assume it has its own power supply, being 3.5".
If you can: try another V2 port. try a V2 powered up hub try it on another V2 capable computer to prove the drive is OK
If you get through all of this and it still fails, it must be the new drive.

Just had this with a new Brother Laser printer - it's USB2
When the pop-up box appeared I click the "Fix it" or whatever button and got a listing of the Root Hubs - all USB2
I then unplugged the printer and re-plugged it into same socket. Whir whir and no more messages.
I presume XP was having a brain fart and that fixed it.
Hope it works for you

My guess is that you are using XP. For a start, there is an update on the MS web site under the non-critical areas that resolves some issues with XP and USB. If you haven't already installed it, then try it and try again as it *MAY* be all there is to your problem with any luck.
The next thing is that I have exactly the same problem with a customer's W2K machine which is perfectly OK otherwise. Doesn't matter what card I use in it, that always happens. I put a 4 port USB2 PCI in it and eventually only 2 of the 4 work USB2 in the end so thinking it was stuffed, replaced it with exactly the same make/model card and same thing happened again within a few months. So, reinstalled drivers and tried again, no luck. Thought maybe I had a rum batch so bought another type entirely but same thing happened again.
My point to all that is that it is my belief that XP fully "USB patched" seems OK but nothing below XP does. Anyway, though I admit that ultimately may not be the truth, it is the way it is appearing to me.
