Sometimes when I switch my PC on its dead, nothing.

I hit the button many times, dead.

So I switch off the mains, thenswitch it back on, and straightaway I hit the
start button on the PC and it fires up.

Whats the problem ?

Thanks kindy.

as a wild guess, it could be going into some sort of failed power saving
mode instead of actually turning off like you think it is? Try turning
off any sort of power saving settings in the bios and windows and see if
it's any better?

actually seen that one in the past, drove me nuts for a while, until I
gave up and replaced the power supply

I sometimes have this problem after a power failure. For some unknown
reason the PC won't always restart by simply pressing the soft power up on
the front. Simply turning off the power by either unplugging the unit from
the mains socket or switching off the power isolation switch on the back of
the PC fixes the problem.

Unless it is really bugging you I wouldn't worry about replacing the power
supply.

Cheers,
Alan

As reported this was commonly caused by power saver settings
and power supply problems. However, some PCs now some
with a power start up process that requires you to hold the button
down for 5 to 10 seconds to turn it on. It is a small number and
usually big brand jobs (Dell, IBM, etc) it is meant to reduce powered
start up by accidental knocking of the button. It is a big pain.
