Hi all. One for the experts...

I have a PCI Ultra ATA/133 IDE controller card in the pc. But when
writing to a hard drive connected to it, I get very slow data transfer,
although the drive connected to it is ATA 133 capable. When writing a
Ghost image I noted the transfer rate, as it's listed by this program.
It was 220 mb min for the controller card. But with the same drive
connected directly to the motherboard controller, I get 2000 mb min
writing a Ghost image- 10 times the speed! Does anyone have any idea
what the problem is? I'm using XP, and i have of course installed the
driver, and it's listed in Device manager without any exclamation mark.
All cables are 80 wire. Thanks,

I suppose you're using an ATA133 IDE cable and not a ATA33?

Forgot to mention...

ST Labs Ultra ATA/133 IDE Controller. Listed in device manager as
Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller.

Which version of Ghost ?

It can get seriously confused about the controller and can produce that result.

OK, first thing to do is to get a handle on what the hardware
can do, run HDTach on the two drives and see if it gets the
same much slower result with the drive on the ST Labs card.

Hey that's a pretty cool prog! Thanks for that! :)

Here's what I got-

http://pedronet.worldispnetwork.com/drive_tests/

which was a bit of a surprise, since the drive connected to the
controller card is faster!

But what does the graph mean?- 10, 20 ,30, gb etc,. and going down? why
are those troughs there?

Looks like if when I want to make a ghost image, I will have to put the
drive in as a slave on the onboard IDE port.

Wots this pedronet bullshit ? I'd have you publicly flogged
if you hadnt so obviously enjoyed that the last time.

> which was a bit of a surprise, since the drive connected to the controller
> card is faster!

Have you got what came with the motherboard
for the hard drive controllers installed ?

> But what does the graph mean?- 10, 20 ,30, gb etc,. and going down?

Thats because the sectors per track varys in bands across
the platters, with the transfer rate essentially determined
by the sectors per track and the rotation rate of the drive.
Theres more sectors per track on the outer tracks and
the entire track passes under the heads at the same
time, so the transfer rate is higher on the outer tracks.

> why are those troughs there?

Just due to XP going off doing something else if they
arent reproducible. If they are reproducible, always
in the same place, the drive is retrying on CRC errors
in that section of the platter and still succeeding.

> Looks like if when I want to make a ghost image, I will have to put the drive

Ask the card manufacturer, they may have a fix for it.

That's the size of the drive being tested.

And the slowing down is because the read/write speed of a drive is dependant
on how far from the disk centre you are. That's why you get an average
result.

The dips could be caused by you doing something - I replied to a post while
the long test was running and got the dips - funny they don't line up
though.

Hi Pedro,

I think your testing is flawed.
Writing a ghost image is not done with XP, its done with a version of IBM dos.
Try doing a speed test in XP, or Sisoft Sandra.

Hi, thanks. (please see my reply to Rod). But how do I do a speed test
in XP? The XP 'Search' feature didn't show anything.

He means just copy a large file in XP in explorer and time it to both drives.
