 | Hello All, I am looking for some help and suggestions in finding the source of a small noise that has been bugging me. The noise was small several months ago but is gradually getting louder.
This car, a Daihatsu charade 1985 model G11, 5 speed manual gearbox, has been making a small BRRRRRRRRRRRRR type sound while rounding a slight left hand bend in the road at say 70 KM/hr. Applying pressure to the steering wheel to straighten up or go round a bend to the right, the noise goes away.
While going round a bend to the left and I ease back on the accelerator, the noise will lesson or disappear.
I have heard CV joints make a slow CLICK CLICK CLICK sound when making a U turn but in my case there is no clicking at all.
The BRRRRRRRRRRR (type of sound one makes while saying it is cold today) sounds to me to be too fast for wheel bearing noise but I am just a DIY hobbyist/enthusiast so I could be quite wrong.
This noise has been gradually getting worse for about several months, the tyres were replaced a few months ago so I know that the noise is not coming from the tyres. I got good wear out of the old tyres so that to me suggests the wheel alignment is OK.
Any suggestions as to what I should check and look at? Thanking you in advance.
Regards, John Crighton Hornsby

Just to clarify, the noise started before the tyres were change, right?

OK, check the boots on the CV joints. If they're split then it's probably a CV dying.
Then again, some tyres get a little noisy after a few thousand kms. What are they? Might be worth rotating them to see what happens.

Hello Oz1, The CV joint on its way out seems like a good bet. Jason had the same drumming noise with his car. About 3 years ago the passenger side outer boot was replaced so it looks like I didn't find the split in the boot quick enough. I thought I did but there you go. Regards, John Crighton Hornsby

When the CVs in my old TN Magna started to go,..the car would make a 'finger-drumming' sound as it went around sweeping curves,..left or right. CVs on those HOS lasted less than 120,000ks before showing considerable wear.

Hello Jason, yes, the "finger drumming" sound is a much better description. That is exactly what the sound is like! I was assuming the slow Click Click Click noise while making hard left or hard right turns was the first sign of wear on a CV joint. There is 292,000 Ks on the odomter, second engine but original CV joints, so looks they have lasted quite well. Thanks for that Jason. Regards, John Crighton Hornsby

 | I would have gone for wheel bearings as an early diagnosis.
Check your CV's by going to a big carpark, throw it in reverse, put the steering on full lock, and reverse the car. You should hear the clicking noise then. Do it in each direction.

Wheel bearings that have broken thru the case-hardening in their ball-tracks, make a continuos low growling sound which changes in level as the road-wheels go over long undulations in the road. CVs have 5 balls which move a short distance back and forth in their tracks on turning. When worn, they give an interrupted sound ewhich varies in speed depending on the speed of the car. When they are getting real bad they start to click as the balls are jolted forward and back in their now very worn tracks. You can on some cars, actually observe the road wheel jerking on slow turns (if you put your cruit out the window to take a look)
