What an incredibly sad day in America. There was no better talk show host ever.
Period. The greatest. RIP.

Listening to the coverage on MSNBC and Fox News, I got the impression
that he had written jokes for Letterman and was always pleased when
Letterman used his work. He also worked on his monolog jokes, even
going so far as to insert bad ones so that he could play off the
audience's reactions.

Last week, one of the tabloid TV shows promised an upcoming segment about rumors
that he had been (or was planning to) writing jokes for Letterman. This sure
came out of the blue.

True, earlier this month and for the last few months, Johnny submitted
some jokes he wrote to David who used them, and Johnny delighted in hearing
David deliver them.

What SAD news to come back to after being off-line. I remember Johnny
Carson from the days when he was the host of a television quiz show. I
thought he was one of the wittiest, most brilliantly funny
personalities to ever grace a television screen. RIP.

I remember him just a little when he was doing "Who Do You Trust?" for
ABC-tv, 1957-1962.
That's where he first hooked up with Ed McMahon as his 2nd banana
(foil).
So, Ed and Johnny have actually worked together for 35 consecutive
years (1957-1992), not just the 30 they did on The Tonight Show.

If anybody else dies in 2005 strictly in the Entertainment field of tv,
movies, or Broadway, who is bigger than Johnny Carson--I haven't figured out
who it could possibly be.

In retrospect, I think it may have been one of those soap sponsored quiz
shows where I first saw him. Someone already mentioned the three giants
in the genre: Jack Parr, Steve Allen and Johnny Carson. Although I
remember being hugely pissed off when Parr was replaced and was a big
fan of both Stevareeno, Parr and others, IMO Carson was top banana. b

It isn't often that you can point to anyone and say, "This man is the
best at what he does." But Johnny was certainly the best television
host ever, as well as being one of the funniest men ever to appear on
the tube.

I remember seeing him on "Who Do You Trust" many years ago, and then on
some of the game shows of the time, like "What's My Line." I didn't see
him for a number of years on "The Tonight Show" because I was a kid and
my parents wouldn't lat me stay up that late, but I did make up for it
later.

I'm a little surprised at the amount of coverage given to Johnny's
death by MSNBC and Fox News, but he is worth ever minute of it.

Johnny started out his show-business career hoping to be a magician. He
never earned his living doing tricks, but he always brought a touch of
magic with him.

If you get the 'Game Show Network' on cable, I suggest you pay close
attention to their shows the next week or so, including this Mon. morning,
in case they have already geared up to put Johnny's guest (or panelist!) on
it.
They usually give a tribute to a great tv or movie star who has just
passed by showing all of their guest appearances on "What's My Line?" over
the years.
"What's My Line? on 7 days/week at 2:30am CT (3:30am ET), usually
following "Beat The Clock" or "The Name's The Same" a half-hour earlier.
http://www.gsn.com/specific_page_elements.php?link_id=S29

IMDb.com has already posted his Date of Death as Jan. 23, 2005.
Johnny made 5 appearances on "What's My Line?" 4 times as a 'Guest
Panelist' (Apr. 8, 1956; Jul. 30, 1961; May 27, 1962 pre-hosting The Tonight
Show); Mar. 24, 1963. Once as a 'Mystery Guest' (Feb. 11, 1962).

I think every kid does/did that eventually!
The trouble is when Johnny was host, the first few years were erased
by NBC so we can't ever see again the whole first show with Groucho Marx on
Oct. 1, 1962.

I didn't! I saw a pic CNN (?) showed of him attending 'The Aviator'
movie two weeks ago, and I wouldn't recognize him even if he removed the
dark sunglasses he had on--but I had no idea he was in such ill health and
was dying. He had gained a lot of weight and that was the difference I
noticed most besides his now-unrecognizable face.

Only Lucy, Jackie, (and Ernie for his innovations) are in that
rarefied atmosphere of the greatest tv stars (or characters they played) who
ever lived.
No last names are needed when you mention these all-time tv greats,
and Johnny is right there with them.

I have to admit I haven't seen photos of him for 2 years or so. But he
was recognizeable and just a little chubbier than he had been. Do you
know of any recent photos of him? I can't find the one on CNN you
referred to.

Someone at work had left the January 24 issue of the National Enquirer
on the break table and as I was thumbing through, there was a brief
story on Johnny and his ill health, with a couple of photos.
Ambulatory, not on oxygen, but definitely bloated. I don't recall if
it mentioned how recent (or not) those photos may have been.

Carson was familiar and inoffensive. Let's not get too effusive with the
praise. He was an icon of his age, but he was not ageless.

I could agree on Jack B., but Bob Hope is so ingrained to me more as a
larger movie (Oscar presenter-host) and radio star, and only did those tv
specials each year instead of a regular series as Mr. Benny did.
That's why I'd give a bit more weight to Mr. Benny than Mr. Hope in the
tv greats--but this is not denigrating what Mr. Hope did in television, but
just not as great a tv performer as Mr. Benny, Lucy, Jackie, and Johnny did
for the medium of television.
Hope [pun, not sure it was intended or not, it just came out that way]
you agree!

There are many people you mention who you say hate to see them go.
Many of them I'm not that much as interested in them as you are.
But I doubt there are many people who don't wholeheartedly agree with you
and I, who are old enough to remember him, how great a comic talent and
straight man Johnny Carson was and really hated to see this man go at only
79.
BTW, if you are watching "Larry King Live" right now, Don Rickles and
Carl Reiner are reminiscing with Larry about Johnny and Larry is showing
clips of some of Carson's greatest moments on "The Tonight Show."

You aren't the movie buff I am, though. Virginia Mayo in White Heat, Best
Years of Our Lives, or The Princess in the Pirate is, to me --- well --
let's just say a lot more significant in my life than anything Christine
McIntyre ever did.

Carson was an enormous figure in showbiz and a favorite of mine on so many
levels. Too much to go into here.
