If I setup a webcam which acts as its own website,
how do I "record" the "video" to a disk file and
then how would I play back the video to see what
has happened?

You need software to do that. Try Windows Media encoder (free) or
RealPlayer (was free -- may no longer be) or you can find a robust video
editing suite at your friendly neighborhood computer store.
